Dan
In continuing forward following our 50th year, we’d like to reflect on the visionary founder who made it all possible, Dan Berkowicz. In 1975, Dan blazed a new trail at a time when opportunities and support for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities were far too limited. With determination, compassion, and a belief that everyone deserves dignity, belonging, and possibility, Dan laid the foundation for what New Hope has become today. Learn more about Dan!
Q: When you think about New Hope’s beginnings, what do you remember most about the early years?
A: I personally remember being overwhelmed and scared, but I’ll give you an anecdote that reinforced we were headed in the right direction. One day, shortly after we opened our doors, we had a family member call and express their disappointment over something. When asked what the issue was, they replied that their family member didn’t want to come home! Moments like this helped me realize that though I went into things not knowing what to expect, the people we support liked it here, and it gave me what I needed to keep going.
Q: Is there a moment or milestone that, to you, marked a true turning point for the organization?
A: The moment I was standing with Ken, the Chairman of our Board at the time, holding a ten-million-dollar check from the state that we received to build the homes on campus. That was probably the proudest moment, because it meant we were able to provide a more respectful and appropriate environment for our folks than what was originally here. We opened our first residence, 410 Larry’s Way, in 1995. It was a true turning point.
Q: How does it feel to see today’s leadership and staff building on the foundation you created?
A: I think it’s incredible just to walk through the halls of New Hope, and I think they’re doing an excellent job evolving. Hope Farm was a great idea, and creating collaborative efforts with places like the college and BOCES is also excellent. Despite any challenges they may face, things are definitely on the right track.
Q: What’s a fun fact about you?
A: I love European football. I played it in high school and college… 40 pounds ago I was quite good. Liverpool is my favorite professional team, and I’ve been all over Europe to watch matches.
Q: What’s a tv show, movie, or song you enjoy?
A: I’m a Godfather freak, and I really enjoyed the production of Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway.
